Independent Mental Health Advocacy
What is Independent Mental Health Advocacy?
Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) is a statutory service for people who are subject to the Mental Health Act 1983. An Independent Mental Health Advocate helps qualifying patients understand their rights, their treatment, and the processes and procedures that apply to them under the Act. The service is entirely independent from the mental health services providing care.
How can Independent Mental Health Advocacy help me?
Being detained under the Mental Health Act can be a frightening and disorienting experience. An IMHA can help you understand what is happening, explain your rights, accompany you to meetings with your clinical team, and support you in raising concerns or making decisions about your treatment. Having an independent advocate by your side can make a real difference to how you experience your care and how your voice is heard.
How can I get Independent Mental Health Advocacy support?
If you are a qualifying patient under the Mental Health Act and would like the support of an Independent Mental Health Advocate, please ask a member of your ward team to refer you, or contact us directly. IMHAs are available to all qualifying patients free of charge.
